Earlier, people went to the sands after parking their vehicles near North Baker Beach, and then striding past Lincoln Boulevard and sand ladder leading to the sands of North Baker. As you go further north, keep an eye out for the dirt road that has a gate because it leads towards Battery Crosby. Keep going and follow the trail on the old fort’s left side just until you reach the bluff’s peak. Go straight towards west and you will reach the foot of the hill, leading to the ocean. Cover your body well as a defense shield for poison oak. As you near a tiny concrete bulkhead that is coming apart, you will observe that the trail passes by the bluffs towards north and converges in the end, with small stairs leading to a gully. At Golden Gate Bridge’s southern tip, the main trail comes to a stopping point. You will now notice a new commencing point that is west, but further past Langdon Court. You will also see parking spaces and it is practically in front of Lincoln Boulevard and from the Fort Winfield Scott. This path that comes from Lincoln’s area, boasts of some wooden stairs and railings too!

The three rocky coves, one next to the other, are visible beneath Fort Scott; look picture-perfect, along with Golden Gate Bridge. The beach’s main trail was hazardous during the seasons of winter and spring, but has improved lately.

Majority of the visitors to the sands prefer to undress and give company to the approximately hundred or more individuals without clothing on the beach, during hot weekends. The number runs to almost 300 on peak summer days. According to one visitor, the place was earlier thronged by  people who are attracted to their own gender and choose to not wear their clothes on the beach. But now, you have all types of people.

There are downsides to this lovely beach though: overcrowded with people being cramped in too small a place, with insufficient sand, too much litter, unpredictable fog and wind, not recommended for swimming, muddy gradients for paths, and uninhibited physical indulgence.

Now, if you do not complain and keep your hands to yourselves, a section of Golden Gate National Recreation lets you go with or without clothes. You can see rangers on foot or astride a horse. Do not indulge in intercourse on the sands or in bushes because it is illegal.

Go on the Geary Boulevard till the end. You may park your vehicle a little away from Cliff House, on the road. Start following the trail on the opposite end. Go past garbage bins and a sitting for a small distance. The path converges and goes down and up and then down again, until you face a broad road. Avoid taking a right turn that takes you to the golf course. Instead, pass another bench when the trail goes right. Here, take a left turn in the direction of dead shrubs until you spot a flight of stairs and a post stating all dogs are required to be on a leash. Go down the steps and take a left turn to one more flight of stairs that takes you to a cove after you have covered a distance of about 100 ft. Otherwise, follow the side road starting at the El Camino del Mar parking area for about a quarter of a mile, up until you have come across a bench. Stay on this trail, from here, which is indistinct at certain places. You may need to trek on the rocks towards the end!

Begin at the trail’s stopping point and go west only until you spot beautiful sunbathing recesses. According to Joseph Friday who is a regular visitor, you have some rocks on which you can bask in the warm sun or some sandy spots, a little farther from the point of entry to the beach. You may use your own or local preventive measures to save yourself from unexpected winds. When it is peak summer, the quarter mile lone cove attracts around 30 visitors; however, in the year’s earlier months, a visitor could spot six undressed men, basking on the beach’s sands. Number of visitors differ on any given day. For instance, sometimes there is a mixture of people who are attracted to their opposite gender, while other days only people attracted to their own gender are there.

The walk is pretty long, frequented by inspecting rangers. Using drugs or having intercourse in the open is not permitted. Swimming is prohibited too. Other paths than the main path are risky, could be barred or contain poison oak.

The first colonies of people who enjoy being unclothed began in British India in the late 1800’s, however Germany is where clothing eventually became a choice and really took off. In the early 1900’s, the concepts of shame and self-hate were published, along with other writings describing how the human body is beautiful and not sinful. Attempts to suppress the movement were made by a well known German party, but not even they were able to put an end to it. The movement spread through France and the Mediterranean and came the United States in 1929. It is in the United States that the prohibition of alcohol on resorts began to establish family values within colonies.

Much of the social stigma roots from the public viewing the colonies as carnal in nature, or even participating in explicit activities. Much of the stigma has dissipated, but in many ways still exist. It is interesting to look at our history as we all know, history repeats itself!
