Canaveral National Seashore is located just south of New Smyrna Beach and has a "legal" nude beach. Since this area is controlled by the Nation Park Service, the local nudity laws cannot be enforced by the local authorities. The area is only accessible via a parking lot located at the far end of the access road to Canaveral. And on most week-ends that parking lot is full. Once you find parking, then you must hike about a quarter of a mile to where others are nude. A sign warns that you may encounter nude sunbathers on that beach. As far as the beach itself, it is wonderful. A truly pristine area that gives you a hint of what "old Florida" was really like. The beach sand is deep and the water is rough. The sand dunes have the native Florida plants and you will see an occasional raccoon or possum searching for turtle eggs on the beach. This is truly a wonderful place to visit. Because nudity is allowed makes it even more special. You can enjoy the peace and serenity of this protected beach without the bindings of the textile world. You actually feel the freedom of the area once you can shed your worldly coverings. Now for the downside; after you've found a place to park and hiked with your beach gear for over a quarter of a mile, you may be bothered by single males prowling the beach for "hook-ups". It is a shame that you must be subjected to this activity, but they have a right to harass you just as you have a right to be left alone. We always go to nude places as a couple. And I wish that everyone did. But I understand that due to circumstances beyond control, there a singles that would like to enjoy the lifestyle even though they have no mate. I assume some of these men could actually be predators and my wife actually became afraid to visit this wonderful place. So we don't go there anymore even though it is just a short drive away. And it's such a shame because so many land-locked souls would give anything to take advantage of this federally protected beach. |
